Fake news! Conspiracy theories, social media algorithms, fake accounts, mainstream news media, podcasts to fit all views, to fit your views and prejudices, covert propaganda networks and lone wolves, misinformation, disinformation, rage, fear, bots, bots, bots …
With so many sources, forces and contradictory interests at play, it’s tough for us to separate the signal from the noise.
How do we know what things are true?
Is objectivity and balance even a thing anymore?
Where goes journalism in this new chaotic age?
Is informed citizenship a naive illusion of the past?
This is what Media, Protest and Democracy (working title) sets out to analyze and seek answer(s) to. The film spans 15 years of dedicated coverage of evolving news and social media, and we seek to distill the good, bad and ugly of our contemporary information miasma.
In seeking understanding we can rely on, maybe we will at least find means of coping in the chaos and paths of discourse on major issues.
